$77 million for the circular textile industry

Holma and ReSpin are establishing Sweden’s first industrial spinning line for recycled textile fibers.

Holma Spinning Mill AB has been awarded up to 77.3 million kronor in funding from Klimatklivet through the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency to establish Sweden’s first industrial spinning line for recycled textile fibers in Gävleborg County.

The company is owned by Holma Helsingland Förvaltning AB, in which the Swedish company ReSpin—which develops technology for the mechanical fiber-to-fiber recycling of textiles—is a partner.

The initiative combines Holma Helsingland’s long industrial experience in spinning, twisting, dyeing, and yarn production with ReSpin’s technology for the mechanical recycling of textile waste into new fibers—without chemicals or water, with low energy consumption, and with a focus on preserving fiber quality.

The project, named“From Waste to Yarn, aims to enable large-scale production of new fibers and yarn from textile waste and contribute to the development of circular textile flows in Sweden and Europe.
Globally, the textile industry is responsible for significant greenhouse gas emissions and the use of virgin raw materials. The development of circular material flows and fiber-to-fiber recycling is therefore seen as a critical part of the transition to a more sustainable textile industry.
“This is a major initiative for the Swedish textile industry. By combining our established spinning expertise with new recycling technology, we are creating new opportunities for the circular textile production of the future. We also see this initiative as strengthening Gävleborg’s role as an industrial hub for sustainable textile production,” says Pär Eriksson, CEO of Holma Helsinglands.

“This investment is an important step toward scaling up fiber-to-fiber recycling on an industrial level and demonstrating that circular textile materials can be produced on a larger scale with a low environmental impact. For us, it’s about building the next generation of the textile industry, where recycling and production are integrated into the same value chain,”says Åsa Strandberg, CEO of ReSpin AB.

Klimatklivet is the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s investment support program for local and regional measures that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The support is directed toward investments with significant climate benefits and the potential to contribute to technology diffusion and the energy transition. In its decision, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency highlights the project’s potential to contribute to both technology diffusion and market introduction within the energy transition.

The project must be completed by December 31, 2028, at the latest.
